TikTok Trends - Yay or Nay
Sweater Vests - YAY
Sweater vests are a tried and true way to fashionably incorporate your grandfather’s closet into your own. Most commonly worn with a white shirt underneath, knit vests are the new TikTok staple.
Featuring argyle patterns and cable knit textures, sweater vests are a funky and cozy way to blend 70’s nostalgia into your wardrobe. Knits like these are gender-neutral, easily accessible, and fun for everyone.
Next time you make a trip to the thrift store, keep your eye out for a sweater vest to be in with the cool kids.
Corsets - YAY
Self-isolation may have gotten to the TikTokers with this one. It seems like the times we are living in are so overwhelming that we have chosen to transport back to the Victorian era. I think most of us can agree that we definitely don’t mind.
Corsets offer a feminine touch to any outfit, emphasizing the curves of one’s body and adding a hint of elegance to everyday fashion. Some are finished with lace and intricate embellishments, and others are sporty and simple. Added bonus: many corsets have lace-up backs so they’re adjustable and more size-inclusive!
Pair a corset with jeans and an oversized blazer and you will stylishly walk the line between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries.
Brown - YAY
The color brown is reminiscent of a warm cup of coffee and fall leaves on a cold autumn day. Having been in quarantine for nearly an entire year, people are more actively beginning to embrace their inner beauty.
Brown emphasizes natural beauty and its warm tones elicit an even cozier mood. The color pairs best with beige and other off-white shades, which are generally staple colors in most people’s wardrobes. Although brown seems like a trend that may fade out as the months get warmer, it is very easy to incorporate into one’s outfits given pieces that they may already have.
Whether you’re running to the grocery store or having a photoshoot in an empty parking lot (as many TikTokers do), brown is a color that allows one to stand out just enough to get attention without overdoing it.
Clay Jewelry - NAY
Again, isolation is getting to the kids these days. During quarantine we have learned how to bake sourdough, whip coffee, and now… DIY ceramics.
Clay jewelry is the newest trend to hit the app. A relatively affordable hobby, making accessories out of clay brings out the inner five-year-old in everyone.
Despite the fun colors and creative outlet clay allows, I just can’t condone this in good conscience. Although I am all for spreading positivity, I am also not a liar. These pieces are not cute and remind me of chewed up gum. Let’s stick to making clay coasters and jewelry dishes.
