4 Skirt Styles Beyond Summer
I’m sure we’re all in agreement that it’s been getting cold enough to make us all want to bundle up in our ugliest sweatpants. Despite the fact it’s really, really easy to waddle out to classes looking like a walking mattress, that doesn’t mean you have to have to put away your fashion sense until next spring. Here are the easiest way to style skirts in ways that’ll have the Garb photography team flocking to you for photos for their next lookbook.
Short and Simple
A colored suede front-buttoned skirt looks classy and mature when matched with opaque black tights and a black turtleneck. The mostly monochromatic color scheme makes picking colors something you could do with your eyes shut (this is not actually endorsed nor recommended by the Garb team). Toss on low heel boots and some golden jewelry to finish off the look and perfect that strut.

Your skirt doesn’t have to be the main focus of your outfit, either. Make the highlight of your look a camel coat, especially suitable for chilly mornings, to enjoy a sophisticated and put together vibe. Pair it with a light cream sweater and a denim skirt with black pantihose to bring a bit of lighter fabric and some casual flair, otherwise tourists might mistake you for a professor and ask for directions to Free Speech Movement Cafe again. Feel free to finish this look with a vintage digital watch and a set of point tip ankle boots.
TOP FORM
But we get it. Sometimes wearing a short skirt is impossible when it’s really windy and you have to walk up all those stairs to get to Etcheverry really fast and don’t want to flash everyone behind you. We understand. And that’s why maxi skirts exist!
Maxi skirts have earned a bit of a reputation in some parts as poorly fitted or a canvas for tacky patterns, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to style rock them on campus. A maxi skirt with heavier, textured fabrics provide a more structured look so you look less like you just rolled out of bed and more like you’re the fashionista that you are. Match it with a fitted long sleeve to cinch in and balance the silhouette.
Middle ground
Styling a midi length a-line skirt with a basic tee and sneakers is a classically comfortable look for those days where it’s too cold to be wearing something shorter, but it’s not quite hot enough to warrant three layers of alternating tights and pantihose. Try the combo out with some lighter colors like blues or teals to keep the fresh theme going. For more texture to the look, try wearing a skirt with buttons going up the front or tying the tee into a knot at the bottom. Or do both. Nobody’s judging.
The best thing about skirts, perhaps, is their versatility; many styles can be worn across seasons when you do the proper layering modifications. And once you’ve got the hang of mixing and matching your layers, the combinations are endless. So go forth, and be stylish and warm.
